CHECHEM HA Cave
Maya Cave Experience
Discover Chechem Ha Cave, a Maya Ceremonial Cave located beyond the towns and high in the lush jungle of the Vaca Plateau. A hidden gem in Cayo, Western Belize!
The Chechem Ha Cave sits on private land on which the landowners discovered the Cave several years ago.
Getting to the Cave involves a stunning uphill jungle hike.
At the Cave entrance, you naturally bow to make it into the small opening. Right here, you are paying your respect and thanking the Gods of this ancient culture.
This sacred Maya Ceremonial Cave contains complete artifacts that date back two millennia. One of the most magnificent ancient sites ever discovered, and it feels so intact with the vast collection of artwork and artifacts right inside.
Archeologists now believe that it was partly used as a storehouse for grain due to the large number of pots and storage containers found inside. This Cave is home to a large assortment of so-called "ollas" or sizeable ceramic storage jars, many of which still contain remnants of maize (corn) and other foods common in the ancient Maya diet.
The final chamber deep inside the Cave opens into a cathedral-like cavern, and in the middle lays a circle of stones with a center stela, the center of some unknown ritual from eons past.
Make a day out of it at the exalted Vaca Outpost and stay and play awhile.
Hike along the jungle trails, enjoy the unique landscape and birds and swim in the Chechem Ha Waterfall.
