Twin towns San Ignacio and Santa Elena
Our twin towns make the perfect setting for a walking tour.
Start uphill at Cahal Pech, a small but mighty Maya Ruin inside town, enjoy calmness and bird watching.
Cahal Pech is oldest Maya Ruin in Western Belize; 1200 B.C.
Once you are ready to leave, take a walk downhill to the famous Hawkesworth Bridge, our biggest suspension bridge in Belize spanning over the Macal River.
Crossing brings you into the sister-part-of-town Santa Elena. Walk by the Tortilla Corn Factory for a little inside tour on tortilla making.
Return into San Ignacio via the low-lying wood bridge, don't miss taking a photo of the Hawkesworth Bridge from this angle.
The prominent San Ignacio signage leads you to the legendary farmer's market of the west.
Its most renowned day is Saturday, a whirlwind of activity when all the local farmers and vendors come together.
Likely you have worked up an appetite by now. So stay at the market and sample from the delicious street food stands or head to Ko-Ox-Han-Nah for top-notch classic Belize dishes.
Another gem for lunch is the Guava Limb restaurant. Here, you find a contemporary menu inspired by the Belizean and Latin Caribbean region using farm-to-table fresh ingredients.
You might skip coffee to save room for handcrafted ice cream at the Ice Cream Shoppe.
Then, finish your walking tour at Ajan chocolate and crafts for some hands-on history in Mayan chocolate making.
BELIZE RIVER
The Belize River runs 180 miles through the center of Belize. It weaves along the edge of the Maya Mountains to the sea north of Belize City.
The meeting point of the Mopan and Macal River east of San Ignacio gives birth to the Belize River at Branch Mouth, which is a fantastic spot for a swim.
During the annual La Ruta Maya Belize Canoe Race in March, this river becomes the center of international attention. The race starts in San Ignacio Town, under the Hawksworth Bridge, and ends at the Belcan Bridge in Belize City.
The river valley is mainly a tropical rain forest and remains an epicenter of local wildlife. These riverbanks are the center stage at Yuma's Riverfront Lodge.
Enjoy turtles swimming, iguanas sunbathing, heated discussions and live performances by the Red-Lored Parrot, Rufous-Tailed Hummingbird, Tropical Mockingbird, Lineated Woodpecker, Bare Throated Tiger Heron, Russet-Naped Wood-Rail, and our National Bird of Belize: the Keel-billed Tucan, among many others.
